Description
Mansfield House Hotel, located on Scotsburn Road in Tain, was built around 1875 and has undergone significant later additions and alterations. Designed by Maitland and Sons in 1902, the building features tooled ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, while the rear is constructed of rubble. The original section is a two-storey, three-bay house with a central door framed by a Doric pilastered doorpiece, which has a blind case and a lugged architraved window above. On either side, there are two-storey canted bay windows that are connected by a continuous crenellated wallhead parapet with angle turrets. A band course runs between the ground and first floors.
To the northwest, there are extensive additions that include a tall three-stage Baronial tower, complete with angle turrets and a stair tower. This tower features a decorative parapet and crenellation, an oriel window at the third stage, and a round-headed entrance with a hoodmould at the base. The north gable has crow-stepped detailing and an apex finialed aedicule, topped with a slate roof.
Inside, the hotel has a panelled interior that dates from the time of the later alterations. The property is also marked by square ashlar gate piers with fluted and moulded caps.
