Description

The Curator's House, located in the Botanic Gardens at 703 Great Western Road, Glasgow, is a two-storey villa designed by architect Charles Wilson in 1840, with later alterations. The building features an asymmetrical design, including a single-storey wing and a conservatory to the west. It is constructed from droved ashlar stone with polished margins, quoins, and a basecourse, and all windows have raised margins.

The plain doorway is situated in the southeast re-entrant angle. To the right, there is an advanced bay with a carefully balanced arrangement of windows: two four-pane windows flank a blind arched opening at ground level, while above, two smaller two-pane windows flank another blind window. The bay is topped with a heavy bracketed cornice, while the rest of the building has a plain eaves cornice and a continuous band course at the first-floor cills. The sash windows display a variety of glazing patterns.

At the rear, there are modern external steps leading to the upper floor, which was converted around 1956. The roof is piended and covered with slate, featuring tile cresting, and there are tall corniced stacks with octagonal cans. The interior has been significantly altered, but it retains an egg and dart cornice in the ground floor sitting room.
