Description

The lodges at the Botanic Gardens on Great Western Road in Glasgow were designed by city architect A B M McDonald in 1894. This pair of similar lodges is built in a mock Tudor style and flanks the entrance to the gardens. They are single-storey structures with symmetrical inward-facing elevations as well as elevations facing Great Western Road. The lodges are constructed from brick, featuring sandstone bands, margins, and long and short work quoins.

Each lodge has steps leading to the door, with an ashlar parapet that supports a gabled porch held up by Roman Doric columns. The porches are flanked by mullioned and transomed three-light windows, with roll-moulded panels that display the Glasgow City crest on the south lodge and the date 1894 on the north lodge.

The elevation facing Great Western Road includes a five-light transomed and mullioned canted window. Timber brackets support the jettied gable, and there is a dentil cornice at the eaves. All gables are half-timbered, with slate roofs and red tile cresting. The north elevations feature brick stacks that rise from the ground.
