Description

Baird Hall of Residence, located at 460 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, is a former hotel built in 1937 by Weddell and W Beresford Inglis, representing the Modern movement. This 8-storey building features 12 unequal bays arranged in a 3-1-4-1-3 pattern. It is constructed of brick with applied red tiles, which are now painted, and has marble dressings at the ground floor. The windows are metal casements, with some alterations made to those on the main elevation.

The elevation facing Sauchiehall Street includes a central canopy over the entrance, with partially altered western bays. Narrow, bowed, recessed windows flank the entrance, and canted semi-circular windows extend from the ground to the 8th floor, connected by a parapet that breaks through the roofline in the 4th and 8th bays. Three central fins rise from a pedestal at the 2nd floor, complemented by fluted angle pilasters and a fluted frieze on the 7th floor.

The eastern return elevation to Garnet Street features 15 windows separated by fins that rise to full height in the northern bays, topped with a raised parapet. The western return elevation consists of 4 bays that repeat the detailing of the main elevation, along with additional plain northern bays.

Inside, the building showcases Art Deco fittings, including a staircase with fluted column landings and an Art Deco timber office located at the center of the 1st floor.
