Description
Locarno is a cast-iron classical building located at 516 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, designed by Robert Duncan in 1898. The structure features ashlar dressings and cladding and stands three storeys tall, rising to four in the central section. The façade is divided into three bays, with windows arranged in a pattern of five on each floor, articulated by a giant order of four Corinthian pilasters that extend through the first and second floors.
The building has a three-bay pilastered recessed entry at No 514 Sauchiehall Street, which is flanked by modern shop fronts. The raised central section is topped with a broken pediment and is adorned with a sculpted frieze and a tympanum featuring a globe on a pedestal. All windows are sash and case with plate glass. The outer bays display a symmetrical arrangement of five cast-iron mullioned windows on each floor, complete with a mutule cill band and corbels on the second floor. The central three windows on the first and second floors are canted, featuring full Corinthian column mullions in the outer windows and sculpted pilasters in the flat flanking bays. The fourth floor is highlighted by a Roman Ionic pilastrade with swags, flanked by a balustrade on the third floor with carved end piers.
Inside, the building boasts an arched hall supported by cast-iron columns, along with niches and decorative mirrors.
