Description

520 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow is a former piano showroom, now a bar, designed predominantly by David Paton Low and Bruce & Hay, with sculpture by James Ewing. This late 19th-century building may incorporate earlier materials and features linked frontages to both Sauchiehall Street and Renfrew Street, with the Sauchiehall Street side being two storeys (now altered) and the Renfrew Street side being single storey with a basement.

The elevation on Sauchiehall Street features a large opening that now has a modern entrance and window, framed by a red sandstone ashlar surround with Greek detailing dating from around 1895, designed by David Paton Low. Above this is a single storey addition from around 1897 by Bruce & Hay, which includes a dentilled cornice, flanking torch-bearing Ionic order caryatids, an eaves cornice, and a stepped parapet topped with a pipe-playing winged figure representing Harmony.

The Renfrew Street elevation, also from around 1897 by Bruce & Hay, is a single storey and basement structure made of red ashlar sandstone with five bays. It features corniced pilasters that divide the bays, an eaves cornice, and a parapet that prominently displays a bust of Beethoven at the center. The roof is piended. The entrance is located on the right, while the left side has four single light windows and two basement entrances below.

The building has modern glazing and is topped with grey slates on the Renfrew Street side. There are also a pair of cast-iron lamp posts and some railing along Renfrew Street. The interior has been comprehensively modernised.
