Description
Kensington Tower is an asymmetrical 2-storey Italianate picturesque villa located at Victoria Circus in Dowanhill, Glasgow. The original villa dates back to before 1858 and underwent extensive additions and alterations between 1897 and 1900, designed by architect Joseph Cowan. A single-storey addition for maid's quarters was completed in 1900 by George Simpson. The building features a stepped irregular T-plan with stugged painted ashlar walling, polished ashlar margins, and rusticated quoins.
The south elevation has a 2-bay section with a canted 2-storey window on the left. To the right, there is a ground-level tripartite window with an architrave, console, and cornice, along with two architraved windows above. This elevation steps back to the east, where a porch was heightened to 2-storeys in 1900 to accommodate an extra bathroom. The entrance features a recessed timber panelled Art Nouveau door. A 4-storey campanile is located in the re-entrant angle, showcasing a tall arched window at ground level with a consoled hood-mould, narrow architraved lights on the first and second floors, and paired round arched lights on the third floor, divided by columnar mullions. To the extreme right, there is a 2-storey, 3-bay block with tripartite windows, added in 1900.
The north elevation was partly remodelled in 1900 and includes a 5-light billiard room window. To the right, there is an advanced gabled bay featuring three arched windows with a continuous archivolt, divided by pilasters. The west side has a single-storey addition from 1897, which includes a canted oriel window. The building has sash windows with plate glass glazing, wide timber bracketed eaves that are elaborated at the tower, and slate roofs topped with a weathervane.
Surrounding the property is a stugged ashlar boundary wall with coping and tall square corniced ashlar gatepiers featuring chamfered arrises.
