Description

Circa 1865. Square plan 2-storey Italianate villa with attics

and basement aligned with entrance elevation to E and main

elevation to S. Low addition to N and studio wing probably by

David MacSkimming, circa 1894. Droved ashlar, polished base

course to ground floor cills; all margins and quoins

polished.

S elevation; 3-bay. At ground, outer bays with canted

windows, corniced and with plain parapet over. At centre,

single light sash with pilastered reveals. At 1st floor all

windows round arched in recessed rectangular panels. Above

bay windows, in groups of 3 with pilastered reveals and

mullions supporting moulded archivolt; centre bay with single

window, similarly detailed. Sash windows, plate glass

glazing. Continuous band course over ground, moulded strings

at cills; band course over 1st. Deeply projecting and swept

eaves. Shallow gabled dormer-heads, (modern glazing) with

decorative barge-boards breaking wallhead. Moulded deep apron

panels.

E elevation, 3-bay witgh projecting single-storey addition

with piended roof to N and 5-light canted bay window facing

E.

At centre bay, steps to projecting single storey porch.

Ashlar balustrade with piers to steps with cast-iron

Corinthian column and decorative brackets supporting later

timber-roofed canopy over steps. Round-headed pilastered

doorpiece. Double leaf panelled door, glazed fanlight. To

left, round-headed window to ground, corbelled canted oriel

above. Otherwise windows and dormers detailed as at S.

Corniced stacks; piended slate roof.

To N single storey and basement studio wing. 5 E facing plate

glass lights to raised ground floor. Deeply recessed

lintelled basement opening.

Interior: classical detailing; cast-iron stair balusters,

stair window with 3 leaded lights above low relief roundel.

Good ceiling plasterwork in ground floor rooms and hall,

front rooms linked by wooden panelled and pedimented screen.

Square ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps, Low droved

ashlar wall with polished coping.
