Description

4 Prince Albert Road in Glasgow is a double villa built around 1858, which was converted into three flats in the 20th century. The building features two storeys, attics, and a basement, constructed from stugged ashlar with polished margins and dressings, and has been stone cleaned.

The outer bays of the villa are slightly advanced and showcase smooth rusticated quoining at the ground level, with incised pilasters framing the corners. Full-height canted bay windows rise from the basement, with pilaster mullions at the ground floor and round-headed lights on the first floor, divided by engaged columns topped with 'rusticated' archivolts. To the right, steps lead down to a pilastered doorpiece with a cornice and double-leaf panelled doors. To the left, there is a similarly detailed bipartite window. The first floor features round-headed bipartite windows that match the detailing of the outer bays. The sash windows have plate glass glazing, except for some small pane glazing at the ground floor. The eaves are deeply overhanging with timber modillion detailing.

To the west, there is a recessed bay with a door leading to No. 6. On the left side, steps lead down to another pilastered doorpiece with a mutule cornice and an arched doorway. An advanced intrusive bay is located in the re-entrant angle. The west flank is made of stugged coursed ashlar.

An extension was added to the east in 1910, which includes a two-storey block with three bays. This extension features a projecting Roman Doric porch with a mutule cornice and a blocking course, along with a round-arched pilastered doorpiece and double-leaf panelled doors. Flanking the porch are two small leaded lights with recessed reveals and bracketed cills, and above these are two round-arched lights, detailed similarly. The east flank is either stugged ashlar or rendered.

The rear elevation is also made of stugged ashlar, with full-height projecting outer bays and piended slate roofs. No. 6 features a canted window at the rear. The building has corniced axial stacks with decorative square cans. Additionally, there are two pairs of corniced square painted ashlar gatepiers.
