Description
North Wing of Hagg's Castle, located at 100 St Andrew's Drive in Pollokshields, Glasgow, is an L-plan tower house that was still under construction in 1587, although it is dated 1585. It served as the seat of the Maxwells until 1595 and was abandoned in 1753. The building was restored in the 1850s, likely by John Baird II, who converted it into a factor's house. The structure features an enlarged wide stair turret with an entrance near the center of the principal front, topped with a conical-roofed bartizan, probably added around 1890. The low northern wing is said to date from 1899-1900.
In the 1940s, the building was divided into flats and was converted between 1972 and 1976 into its current use as a children's museum. The North Wing has three storeys with attics and is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, showcasing distinctive cable mouldings, crow-stepped gables, and slate roofs. The west end of the south front features a jamb that was mainly rebuilt by Baird, which originally included a generously proportioned stair leading to the principal floor. An original door is located in the re-entrant angle, adorned with elaborate ornamentation. A projecting stair turret on the west flank rises above the ground floor, and one tall wall head dormer is original. The building includes massive east gable stacks over the kitchen fireplace and sash windows. The interior is predominantly 19th century, replicating the details of the external ornament, with one elaborate original chimneypiece. There is also a low outbuilding to the west, mainly dating from the late 18th to 19th century, which incorporates a dormer head from the castle.
