Description

Whitehall, located at 79 Springkell Avenue in Glasgow, is a villa designed by Robert Duncan around 1895, with a billiard room added by P McGregor Chalmers around 1913. This two-storey and attic building features three bays and is classically detailed. The principal elevation is constructed of coursed ashlar, while the other elevations are made of squared and snecked tooled sandstone. Notable architectural elements include a base course, string course, and cill courses, a Doric columned and pedimented portico, canted bays, raised quoins, dentiled eaves, cast-iron brattishing and finials, as well as piend and platform roofs.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a central advanced portico flanked by canted bay windows, with tripartite windows that are advanced at the ground level and a four-light window on the first floor. Above, a section of balustrade is situated between the canted bays, along with a single light window and an oculus dormer in the attic. To the right, there is a later single-storey, one-bay billiard room addition featuring a five-light canted bay.

The south elevation has a large advanced two-storey and basement section with irregular fenestration and an off-centre pitched roof canted attic dormer above. To the right, steps lead to a doorway in a single bay section within the re-entrant angle. To the left, the billiard room addition has steps leading to a doorway that includes stained glass in the upper panel, along with fanlights and sidelights.

The roof is covered with grey slate, and the windows are predominantly timber sash and case with plate glass and horns. There are tall wallhead stacks on the west, east, and south sides.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 2004. The property is also accompanied by gatepiers and boundary walls to the north, featuring a low coped tooled sandstone wall. To the left, there is a pair of square gatepiers with canted finials, and to the right, a more elaborate pair of square gatepiers topped with ball finials.
