Description
Carmyle House is a small mansion built in 1836 by the architect William Burn of Edinburgh. The house has an asymmetrical design, featuring one and two storeys, with deeply projecting eaves, gables, and dormer heads. It includes a variety of window styles, such as single, double, and canted windows, along with wall head or axial stacks that have bold square flues linked by a cornice. The exterior is finished in stugged ashlar with painted margins, most of which are lugged with semi-circular moulding at the lintels.
The entrance is located on the west elevation in a narrow gabled bay, featuring a panelled door set within an architrave. This doorpiece has a bracketed cornice and a shaped pediment, which is flanked by blocks topped with ball finials. Above the door is a 12-pane sash window, and to the right is a stack with a projecting chimney breast. To the left, there is a recessed bay that contains a 12-pane stair window above a blind square opening. Beyond this, a lower wing has an advanced and gabled two-storey outer bay, along with three single-storey inner linking bays, one of which has a dormer.
The east and south elevations are also asymmetrical and feature canted windows and dormer heads. The roof is slated and banded above the eaves.
Inside, the house has panelled doors within architraves, some decorative ceiling plaster work, and decorative cast-iron stair balusters.
The garden is partly enclosed by a rubble wall and features two square painted ashlar gatepiers to the north, which have flat pyramidal caps, along with decorative wrought-iron gates.
