Description

Camperdown House is a large Greek Revival mansion house constructed between 1824 and 1828, designed by William Burn in 1821. It is a substantial building with two main storeys, a concealed attic, a basement, and associated single-storey and basement wings for kitchens and private apartments arranged around a sunken rear service court. The main facades are finished in polished ashlar, with the ground floor windows architraved and corniced, while the first floor windows lack architraves. The basement and attic are blind, the latter concealed behind a full entablature, cornice, and parapet.

The east elevation is dominated by a central, hexastyle, fluted Ionic columned portico with a pediment. The portico features a coffered ceiling supported by twin inner columns. The south elevation has eleven bays, with the outer bays set back and featuring vestigial antae pilaster angles. The central three bays are contained within a pilastered Thrasyllus portico, accessed by steps, and topped with a block pediment. The west elevation features a projecting garden entrance with a tripartite, segmental-arched doorway flanked by pilaster angles, and a block pediment. A single-storey and basement private family wing extends to the north, featuring five bays, with the two end bays projecting for the family bedrooms. It is finished with a cornice and blocking course. The roofs are piended and feature two exceptionally tall corniced stacks.

The north elevation is constructed from coursed squared rubble. It includes a four-bay family wing with a piend-roofed lean-to, and a lower projecting section with dormer-head windows breaking the eaves at the first floor. An off-centre segmental-arched cart entrance is also present. The kitchen court is encircled by a lean-to slate roof supported by cast-iron columns with bell capitals. The rear of the main house presents a five-bay facade with two tripartite windows.

The kitchen, located at the northeast angle, is a cruciform single-storey and basement structure with a single architraved window and antae pilasters to the east elevation. It features an entablature, cornice, and blocking course, and includes a modern entrance on the north side. A tall wallhead stack has been removed from this section.

The roofs are piended and slate-covered. A timber-framed cupola sits over the hall, and a rectangular lantern is above the stair. Ashlar stacks are present throughout. Windows are sash and case, with a 12-pane glazing pattern.

The interior showcases a sophisticated plan that separates public and private apartments. A central, full-height saloon contains four scagliola-clad columns (Ionic at ground level, Corinthian on the first floor) and cast-iron interlaced balcony railings surrounding a pendentive dome with stained glass. The main stair features brass balusters and focuses on a copy of J S Copley's painting of Admiral Duncan receiving the surrender of the Dutch at the Battle of Camperdown. Marble chimney pieces, highly ornate with entwined foliage and cherubs, are found in the drawing room. Cast-iron grates with copper inlay are located in the library, some with folding doors. Original timber doorpieces, plaster cornices, and coffered ceilings are present in the principal rooms. The library is fitted with timber and copper-grid bookcases. A circular breakfast room now functions as a golf club bar. Simple attic rooms are present, while windowless servants' accommodation is located in the basement off a primitivist Tuscan-columned hall. The estate is enclosed by rubble-built boundary walls with stone copes.
