Description

53-100 Kelvin Court on Great Western Road in Glasgow consists of two large H-plan, six-storey blocks, with the western part of the eastern block reaching seven storeys. Designed by J N Fatkin in 1938, these purpose-built flatted mansion blocks showcase a 1930s streamline style. They feature a reinforced concrete frame with brick facing and decorative brick detailing, highlighted by prominent horizontal white painted concrete banding that mainly defines the balconies and main windows. The buildings have metal-framed multi-light windows with small pane glazing, including horizontal panes in the center lights of square projecting windows. The roofs are flat and include lift towers and grouped stacks.

On the northeast elevation, entrances are located at the re-entrant angles and at the center within a stepped tower-like feature, which is boldly defined by white painted surrounds and projecting fins. Above, there are tall narrow stair windows with glass-brick glazing. The north ends of the wings have projecting outer square windows linked by further projecting balconies. The inner bays are balanced around the center, featuring a variety of square, projecting, and canted windows, along with some simple two and three-light additional windows or balcony doors. Continuous band courses define the brickwork between the first and second floors, the second and third floors, and the fourth and fifth floors, with specific bands for balconies and canted windows on the second to fourth floors.

The southeast elevation has entrance towers flanking the central section, using similar details in a differing pattern, with curved balconies at the angles of the projecting bays. The side elevations continue the pattern of long fronts, incorporating additional service entrances and fenestration for kitchens and bathrooms, including small porthole windows. The two blocks are connected by a low garage block.
