Govanhill Library, 170 Langside Road, Govanhill, Glasgow

Govanhill Library, located at 170 Langside Road in Govanhill, Glasgow, was designed by James R Rhind and built between 1902 and 1906. This single-storey library showcases Edwardian baroque architecture and is situated on a corner site. It features round-arched openings set in deep recesses, supported mainly by paired Ionic columns. The entrance, which includes a modern wheelchair ramp, is located at the north end of the Langside Road front and is topped with a dome that has a green copper or bronze winged figure. The symmetrical Calder Street front has pedimented outer bays. The building is constructed of polished ashlar with a base and entablature, and it includes sculptured figures above the balustrade near the corners. The roof is concealed, and the interior has been modernized.
