Calder Street Public Baths And Washhouse, 99 Calder Street, Govanhill, Glasgow

Calder Street Public Baths and Washhouse, located at 99 Calder Street in Govanhill, Glasgow, was designed by A B MacDonald, the burgh surveyor, between 1912 and 1917, with the building dated 1914. This Edwardian baroque structure features public baths, with a wash house that was converted into a laundrette in 1971, accessed from Kingarth Street. The building is constructed of red ashlar and has long elevations with concealed roofs. The main facade facing Calder Street is symmetrical, consisting of two storeys over a basement, with tripartite windows at the ground level and paired pedimented doorcases, each adorned with an oculus above. The first floor has square openings with original glazing, and there is a deep entablature along the top. Iron railings with ashlar piers enhance the exterior. Inside, there are two top-lit swimming pools supported by ferro-concrete arched ribs, along with a door leading to Kingarth Street and a series of segmental-arched lights. The interior remains largely intact.
