Description
The Former Public Baths and Swimming Pool on Bruce Street, opened in 1932 by the Master of Works for Clydebank Burgh Council, is a 3-bay stylised Baroque building that features a 7-bay, single-storey retained facade of the former Public Baths to the right. The structure is built of sandstone ashlar and includes a base course, band course, and cornice. The openings are rusticated with keystones, and the Public Baths facade has round-arched entrance openings along with segmental arched window openings, all featuring bracketed cills.
The swimming pool is located to the left of the building. The centre bay showcases a large, segmental-arched, 6-light window with a stone mullion and transomed window, above which is the Clydebank Coat-of-Arms and a broken wallhead pediment topped with a central obelisk that breaks the eaves. Flanking pilasters are adorned with urns at the wallhead.
The building predominantly features fixed timber windows with small pane glazing, while the baths facade has open window openings. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the swimming pool roof is barrel-vaulted with a large raised gabled rooflight.
Inside, as observed in 2009, the original layout of the swimming pool remains largely intact, supported by reinforced concrete roof trusses. Decorative metal railings are present on the stairs and at both upper and lower levels of the poolside. There are rows of changing rooms on the upper level of the poolside, each with timber half doors. Internal pool steps are located at the corners, and a cast-iron and timber turnstile remains in situ. The entrance hall includes an internal glass and timber pay office with cupboards, shelves, and high-level windows. A garden has been laid out in the area where the former public baths were located, which were demolished behind the facade in 2010.
