Description
The boundary wall and gatepiers of the Church of Our Holy Redeemer in Clydebank were designed by Peter Paul Pugin in 1903 and extended by Pugin and Pugin in 1907. The church itself is a Roman Catholic building featuring a nave and aisles, with a gable facing the street and a striking series of leaded glass windows. It is constructed from bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings and exhibits Gothic architectural style. The main gabled elevation includes five tall lancet windows, with the inner ones being taller, and two doors. The church has buttresses, which rise above the eaves and are gabletted, while the aisle end walls have a different treatment.
Inside, the church features a chancel, side chapels, and a baptistry, all covered with slate roofs. The interior is elaborate, showcasing a distinctive high altar and reredos adorned with sculptured figures and canopied niches. The stations of the Cross are by Morgari of Turin, and the aisle arcades are supported by octagonal columns. There is also a wooden shrine to the Madonna of Perpetual Succour, which was brought from Rome.
The presbytery, built in 1895 by Peter Paul Pugin and extended in 1907 by Pugin and Pugin, is adjacent to the chancel. It is two storeys high with three bays, constructed from bull-faced red ashlar and featuring mullioned windows and a piended slate roof. The boundary walls are complemented by stone piers and iron railings.
