Description
Victory Baths, located on Inchinnan Road in Renfrew, was designed by T G Abercrombie and completed in 1921. This two-storey, five-bay building showcases a symmetrical Scots Renaissance style, featuring a distinctive central round tower with a bellcast roof and deep eaves on the front (southwest) side, along with a gabled swimming hall at the rear. The front section is constructed of ashlar, while the rear is made of concrete rendered brick. The building has raised cills and crowstepped gables on the sides, as well as a base course and cornice. Dormers interrupt the wallhead, each with broken segmental-arched dormerheads that include a thistle icon in the opening. There are later rendered extensions added to the swimming hall on the southwest and northwest sides.
The southwest elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central two-stage advanced entrance tower with steps leading to an opening framed by a moulded, corniced, key-stoned, shouldered architrave that includes a dated key-stone. Above this entrance, the name "VICTORY BATHS" is inscribed, along with a memorial stone flanked by coats of arms. The upper stage of the tower has three window openings with Doric pilastered architraves, topped by a bellcast roof with a thistle finial. The flanking sections consist of two symmetrical bays, with continuous raised architraves surrounding the window openings on both the ground and upper storeys, and aprons on the upper storey.
Inside, as of 2013, the original layout remains largely intact, featuring a swimming hall at the rear. The entrance hall includes a wall-mounted timber war memorial and some simple cornicing. The pool hall boasts a fully glazed roof and Doric pilasters along the side walls, with changing cubicles located at the poolsides on the ground floor. A balcony above provides timber seating.
The building predominantly features multi-pane timber windows, some of which have top-opening hoppers. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cast iron rainwater goods.
The boundary walls and railings along the street elevation consist of a low coped boundary wall topped with wrought iron railings that display some decorative motifs. Square-plan piers are located at the northwest and southeast corners.
At the center of the property, there are a pair of capped, square-plan gatepiers with base courses and blank stone plaques facing the street, topped with lanterns supported by metal stands.
