Description

The Brown Institute, located at 41 Canal Street in Renfrew, is a two-storey building constructed in 1903, showcasing a modern movement style. It features a red sandstone exterior made of snecked bullnosed rubble with polished ashlar dressing, and the windows are primarily leaded glass. The roof is covered with Scotch slate.

The street elevation is symmetrical, with a central doorway that has a round-headed entrance set within a square-headed architrave, topped by a three-light fanlight. Below the corbels of a broad canted oriel, there is an elaborate sculptural panel inscribed with "Brown Institute 1903." On either side of the door and panel, pilasters with intricate mannered capitals transition into corbels. The oriel window is flattened and includes a central four-light window with mullions and transoms, flanked by single transomed windows on each side.

At the ground level, there are broad depressed arched openings; to the left is a five-light timber mullioned and transomed window, while the right features a single shop front, both adorned with multi-paned glazing in the heads. Small single windows are located on the first floor to the left and right of the oriel, each with chamfered ingoes. The wallhead is topped with a gablet cope and features a castellated raised parapet above the oriel. At the ridge of the roof, there is a central Art Nouveau cupola vent with an ogee roof and a wrought-iron finial.
