Description

The Tanhouse is an 18th-century, two-storey house with an attic, featuring three bays. It has ashlar window and door surrounds, a base course, and is finished in cream harl. A single-storey addition from the 20th century is located at the rear.

On the east elevation, there is a central door flanked by single windows, with three first-floor windows centered above, closely hugging the eaves. The north elevation has a large opening added to the ground floor, a first-floor window to the left, and two attic windows. The lower part of the left quoin has a chamfered corner. The west elevation includes a modern single-storey lean-to and a conservatory to the right, with a modern extension continuing to the north and west. The south elevation features a ground floor window and a first-floor window.

The house predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows with horns. Steps lead up to the entrance door, which is a two-leaf timber panelled door. There are also two timber boarded doors to the north. The roof has a pitched gable to the north and a piended roof to the south, covered with clay pantiles. There is a gable apex stack to the north and a ridge stack to the south, both with circular cans. The rear extension has modern clay tiles, and there is a chimney to the northwest.

The interior was not seen in 2001.

Boundary walls made of rubble extend from the northwest gable to Erskine Brae, featuring tooled coping stones. There is a door to the right of the gable and a window to the right. The wall curves around the corner, with timber gates leading to the rear of The Tanhouse, and it continues along Erskine Brae. A tall wall extends from the southeast gable down Tanhouse Brae, adjoining 4 Tanhouse Brae, with a timber door in the wall beside 4 Tanhouse Brae.
