Description

3 Tanhouse Brae is a 17th to 18th century, two-storey, three-bay house that underwent refurbishment in 1952 by W Schomburg Scott. The exterior is harled with a base course and features exposed stone surrounds around the windows and doors.

On the southeast elevation, there is a central ground floor door located beneath a forestair, with a first-floor entrance door directly above it. The elevation includes single windows flanking both the ground and first floors. The forestair, which is accessed from the right, has a chamfered stone support that is partially renewed and covers part of the right ground floor window. A plaque from the National Trust for Scotland is positioned to the right of the door.

The southwest elevation is attached to 2 Tanhouse Brae, while the northwest elevation features a first-floor window to the right, with a rear wing on the left that includes a window and door in the right return and another window in the rear gable wall. The northeast elevation is attached to 4 Tanhouse Brae.

The windows throughout the building are 12-pane timber sash and case, and there are timber boarded two-leaf doors. The roof is pitched and covered with clay pantiles, featuring crowsteps on the northeast side. There is an apex stack on the northeast and a pitched rear wing with a clay pantile roof and a coped gable apex stack.

The interior has been partially seen as of 2001, with a flagstone floor in the central ground floor storeroom.
