Description
Later-late 17th century. 2-storey, 2-bay house to W; larger 2-storey, 4-bay house to E (now all 1 house). Harled; base course; stone surrounds to windows and doors; chamfered surrounds to larger house.
SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: door to far left; window to right; 2 1st floor windows centred above. Advanced, corbelled section of upper wall between 2 houses. Larger E house; chamfered door surround to entrance door; 2 windows to left; 1 window to right. Stone panel above far left window carved with meat cleaver and steel and inscribed 'I.S. I.L 1664'. 3 1st floor windows. National Trust for Scotland (NTS) plaque between 2nd and 3rd window. Threshold stone to entrance door overlies open street drain.
SW ELEVATION: attached to 3 Tanhouse Brae.
NW ELEVATION: partially seen, 2001. 1st floor window to smaller house. E house; large ground floor window to right; 2 1st floor windows above. Central, mid level window and 1st floor window to left.
NE ELEVATION: not seen, 2001. Tall wall of The Tanhouse adjoins gable wall and obscures view of NE elevation.
12 and 16-pane timber sash and case windows. Timber boarded door to smaller house; partially glazed, timber boarded 2-leaf door to larger (E) house. Pitched roofs; clay pantiles. Lower roofline to smaller house. Crowstepped gables; skewputts; coped gable apex stacks to larger house; polygonal cans.
