Description
The Tanner's House, located at 4 Tanhouse Brae in Culross, dates from the later part of the 17th century. It is a two-storey, two-bay house on the west side, connected to a larger two-storey, four-bay house on the east, now functioning as a single residence. The exterior is harled with a base course, featuring stone surrounds for the windows and doors, and chamfered surrounds on the larger house.
On the southeast elevation, the principal entrance is located to the far left, with a window to the right and two first-floor windows centered above. There is an advanced, corbelled section of the upper wall between the two houses. The larger eastern house has a chamfered door surround at the entrance, two windows to the left, and one window to the right. Above the far left window, there is a stone panel carved with a meat cleaver and steel, inscribed with 'I.S. I.L 1664'. The elevation also features three first-floor windows, with a National Trust for Scotland plaque positioned between the second and third windows. The threshold stone at the entrance door covers an open street drain.
The southwest elevation is attached to 3 Tanhouse Brae, while the northwest elevation is partially visible, showing a first-floor window on the smaller house, along with a large ground-floor window to the right and two first-floor windows above on the eastern house. There is also a central mid-level window and a first-floor window to the left.
The northeast elevation is not visible, as the tall wall of The Tanhouse obscures it. The windows are 12 and 16-pane timber sash and case types. The smaller house has a timber boarded door, while the larger house features a partially glazed, timber boarded two-leaf door. Both houses have pitched roofs covered with clay pantiles, with the smaller house having a lower roofline. The larger house boasts crowstepped gables, skewputts, and coped gable apex stacks, along with polygonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 2001.
