Description
Snuff Cottage, located on Tanhouse Brae in Culross, dates back to 1763, with rear additions made in the 1950s. This is a two-storey, three-bay house with a garage to the north. The exterior features blue coloured render with stone surrounds for the door and windows, and a moulded eaves course.
The principal elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a central door with a segmental arched, blocked door surround that includes a keystone and imposts. There is a threshold stepping stone over an open street drain. Windows are positioned to the right and left of the door, with a round-headed window above it, which has a blocked surround and a keystone. An inscription around this window reads, "Wha wad ha' thoct it 1763 WC." The flanking windows are close to the eaves and are centered above the ground floor windows. A redundant curved skewputt is located to the right. The garage, which is single-storey, is to the left and features a garage door on the left and a window on the right.
The north elevation presents a plain gable, while the east elevation has an exposed rubble wall. It includes modern glazed doors to the left and a modern flat-roofed dormer window above. There is a small first-floor window in the center and another flat-roofed dormer window to the right. An advanced timber and stone extension to the right has a door and window on the right return, with another window on the left and left return. There is also an advanced timber boarded porch to the left of the extension, featuring a glazed door. A redundant curved skewputt is found at the far left. The garage is to the right, with a window to the left and an advanced section to the right that has a central window and steps leading to a door in the right return. An archway at ground floor level to the right contains recessed doors.
The south elevation is attached to Preston View. The windows throughout the property are 12-pane timber sash and case, with horns on the first-floor windows. The round-headed window features lattice glazing and a central bullseye. The ground floor windows on the principal elevation are rebated for shutters, with the shutter hinge pins still remaining. The rear has replacement windows. A rooflight is present on the west side. The building has a two-leaf timber door and features pitched roofs covered with clay pantiles. The north side has a crowstepped gable leading to the workshop/garage, while the house has kneelered gables and gable apex stacks.
Inside, the interior is modern, but a metal door pin to secure the narrower section of the entrance door remains.
Additionally, there is a tall rubble garden wall to the north.
