Description

Andrew Melville Hall, built between 1963 and 1968 by James Stirling, is a modernist halls of residence building located on a sloping site within the University of St Andrews, North Haugh. The building comprises a central, three-storey, square-plan communal block with glazed facades and two long, narrow accommodation blocks projecting to the northeast to form a V-plan. A single-storey service court extends to the rear northwest angle.

The communal block’s northeast elevation features a glazed wall, stepped at each level to create terraces with tubular metal railings. Steps lead to an entrance and reception hall, which open onto a glazed promenade concourse running the length of the accommodation blocks at a mid-height. The southwest elevation has a projecting glazed portico entrance on the higher ground, leading to a grand staircase descending down the north side of the block. Otherwise, the block displays blind concrete walls to the outer bays and rear.

The two accommodation blocks are serrated in plan, divided into five blocks, A, B, C, D, and E, stepping down in height. The block to the north is slightly longer. The construction uses repeating diagonally ribbed, pre-cast concrete panels with window openings set obliquely within re-entrant angles. Concrete parapets top the flat roofs and feature greenhouse-like enclosures providing access from the stairwells. Penthouse warden accommodation blocks are located at the west end of each roof. Metal-frame windows are used throughout.

The interior follows a functional, pared-back design with a significant amount of original fabric remaining. Structural steel pillars are painted white. Round windows define communal doorways. Blond timber finishes and signage are noteworthy.

The communal block includes a connecting corridor/entrance hall leading to a broad staircase that rises through the north side, providing access to a dining hall, social and games rooms, and services at upper levels. The dining room is distinguished by a coffered ceiling with recessed lighting and blond timber panelling and floors are found in the principal communal rooms.

The accommodation wings are internally arranged with a roughly mirrored layout on each side. A promenade viewing gallery incorporates study spaces and kitchen areas, punctuated by large porthole windows appearing in groups of three. Within each wing, 250 polygonal student bedrooms are arranged on either side of a central spine, featuring tubular metal railings to the stairwells. Associated shower rooms, toilets, and other services are also within the spine. Staff accommodation has been remodelled to provide additional student lodging. Reception and wardens’ offices occupy the ground floor of the north wing and communal study rooms are located at the far end of the promenade.
