Description
The Hermitage, located at Backdykes in Anstruther Easter, was originally built around 1720 and reconstructed in 1815. It is a three-storey building with four windows on the ground floor, three on the first floor, and four on the second floor. At the back, there is a staircase bow with a lean-to roof, flanked by lean-to outshots. The exterior is harled and whitewashed with margins and has a slated roof.
The east wing, which is now mainly converted to a single-storey, was originally a two-storey structure with pantiles. This wing served as stables and has a square plan, consisting of a single storey and loft, also harled and with pantiles, and dates from an earlier time when it belonged to the manse. Inside, the building features a simple interior with a half-turn geometrical staircase, which has Regency gothick cast-iron balusters.
