Description
Melville Manse in Backdykes, Anstruther Easter, dates back to 1590 and was originally built as a three-storey L-plan structure. It has since been altered to a Z-plan layout, with extensions added in 1753 and further modifications in 1864. The exterior is harled with margins and features crowstepped gables. The jamb of the original 1590 house is inscribed with "THE WATCH TOWER." A notable feature is the four-storey corbelled stair turret that projects out at the first floor in the re-entrant angle. The timber work was renewed in 1779, and the interior was refinished in 1798, with modifications to the pitches of the roof at the dormer heads evident from those dates. The property also includes contemporary garden walls.
