Description

Ivydene, located on the east side of Old Hall Lane in Mottram Old Hall, is a house built around 1825, although the rear wing dates back to 1727. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof and features a 5-bay double-depth central staircase plan over two storeys, accompanied by a large rear wing. The ground floor is elevated above a rusticated basement, and the central three bays project forward and are topped with a pediment. The facade is striking, with a projecting plinth, sill bands, a first-floor band, a modillion eaves cornice, a pediment, a blocking course, and a hipped roof with large ashlar chimney stacks.

The central entrance consists of a 6-panel door flanked by Regency-style overlight and side-panels, leading to a flat porch supported by Tuscan columns and adorned with decorative iron railings. This entrance is accessible via opposing flights of steps. The building has four ground-floor and five first-floor windows, all featuring 12-pane sash designs. The central first-floor window is distinguished by reeded pilasters and an entablature. Ivydene's rear wing has a stone slate roof, with ground-floor windows that have flat-faced mullions and first-floor windows with square-cut surrounds, along with quoins, coped gables, and ridge chimney stacks.

Inside, the Old Hall retains much of its original character, including a vaulted plaster entrance hall and a grand staircase.
