Description
West End Cottage is a traditional two and one-and-a-half storey domestic building with a rectangular plan, likely dating to around the mid-18th century, though it may be older. Originally, it comprised two separate dwellings, which were converted into a single house before 1814. The building is made of local sandstone and was previously rendered. The roof height has been raised, and the pantiled roof and windows are later replacements designed in a traditional style. The original configuration of the two earliest dwellings, which were one-and-a-half storeys, along with their window arrangements, are now visible due to the absence of render. The gables feature crowstepped designs, and there are beaked skewputts; the one on the east gable is located within the wallhead at the former roof line.
The house is prominently situated near a road junction, with rubble boundary walls enclosing a triangular-plan site.
