Description
Bishop Leighton's House, located at 7 Mid Causeway in Culross, is an early 17th-century, two-storey and attic house with four bays, along with a one-storey, two-bay section to the southwest. The exterior is harled with chamfered stone surrounds.
On the north elevation, which is the principal facade, the door is positioned off-centre to the right, with a window flanking it on the same side. There is a small inset section to the right of the door that features a plaque from the National Trust of Scotland. To the left of the door is another window, and a former door is located at the far left. Above, there are four first-floor windows aligned with the ground floor windows and door, with a small window between the second and third bays. The second bay contains a window within a partly jettied section. The one-storey section to the right has two ground floor windows (with a former door to the left) and a central upper floor window that hugs the eaves but is blocked. A threshold step serves as a bridge over a street drain.
The east elevation is attached to 5 Mid Causeway, while the south elevation features a central door with a stone niche above it, flanked by single ground floor windows. There are three first-floor windows hugging the eaves, with a window in the one-storey section to the left and a smaller window to the right.
On the west elevation, there are two attic windows, and a lower wing is attached to 9 Mid Causeway.
The house predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, along with timber boarded doors, including a studded front door. The pitched roof is covered with clay pantiles and has a crowstepped gable on the west side. There are corniced stacks at the apex of the west gable and two corniced ridge stacks.
Inside, the interior is modern, with stairs opposite the entrance door that feature moulded stone steps.
