Description

The Dundonald Arms is a public house and hotel located at 4 and 6 Mid Causeway in Culross. It dates from the mid-19th century, with later additions, and possibly incorporates elements from a house built in the mid to late 17th century. The building is two storeys with an attic and features a four-bay façade, along with a later single-storey wing on the far right (northeast). It is constructed from stugged snecked stone and includes a first-floor cill course, eaves course, and chamfered window surrounds with stops. There is a base course and a corniced eaves course with a frieze on the later northeast extension.

On the southeast elevation, the main entrance is located in the second bay, framed by a chamfered ashlar door surround. Above the door is a corniced frieze, a triglyph, and a curvilinear pediment with volutes. Pub lettering is situated to the right of the door. To the left of the entrance is a single window, while there are two windows to the right. Three first-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves. A pub sign hangs between the second and third windows. There are two canted dormer windows integrated into the roof. The single-storey extension to the right features a bipartite window on the left and a door on the right.

The southwest elevation is attached to 8 Mid Causeway. The northwest elevation shows only the first floor partially, with a window at both the far right and far left. The central section is advanced and contains a central bipartite window, along with two bipartite dormer windows in the roof. A modern flat-roofed function wing is located to the left.

On the northeast elevation, there is a plaque dated '1661' and initialed 'WA SC' at the upper left, along with a single-storey extension at ground level.

The building features 4-pane timber sash and case windows with moulded brackets around the window surrounds. The single-storey extension has six upper panes and one lower pane. There is a two-leaf timber door with a fanlight, rooflights, and a pitched slate roof that extends over the rear addition. The dormer windows are piended slate, while the northeast extension has a flat roof. The gable apex stacks are coped, with numerous circular cans, and there is a tall square stack on the northeast extension.

Inside, the pub has a modern interior.

At the rear, there is a lean-to outhouse on the left with a clay pantile roof. A tall rubble wall sweeps from the lean-to along Back Causeway, enclosing the rear yard, and features a replacement timber door leading to the yard.
