Description

The Ark is a 17th-century, two-storey house with an attic and a rectangular plan, located in Culross. The building features sandstone rubble walls with a harled exterior and has exposed stone surrounds and an exposed stone eaves course.

On the northwest elevation, there is an advanced bay at the far left with an entrance door on the ground floor that has a roll-moulded surround. Above this door, to the left, is a first-floor window. A plaque from the National Trust for Scotland is positioned to the left of the door. The left quoin is partly chamfered. To the right, there is a set-back bay with a ground floor window and a first-floor window above to the left. The right quoin is chamfered with a quoin stop at the eaves. A three-bay section is set back further to the right, featuring a door to the left with a chamfered surround and two windows to the right. Three first-floor windows are centered above this section, with the smaller central window lacking a stone surround. The right quoin is chamfered to approximately the height of the ground floor ceiling.

The northeast elevation has a ground floor window to the left and a first-floor window centered above and to the right. The stone eaves course on this side is painted white.

The southeast elevation is not visible as it is obscured by the parallel Little Causeway and Ark B. The southwest elevation is partially visible, showing a first-floor window to the left and right, along with two central attic windows.

The windows are replacement 12-pane timber sash and case styles. The doors are studded timber boarded with tirling pins on both. The roof is pitched to the southwest and piended to the northeast, covered with clay pantiles. There is a gable apex stack on the southwest and polygonal clay cans.

Inside, the interior has been modernized, but there is an exposed stone arch at the first floor on the southeast wall.

Adjacent to the house is an L-plan harled wall that is set back slightly from the southwest gable, enclosing a yard to the southwest. This wall features a curved quoin, exposed flat coping stones, a window/chute to the left, and a door to the right in the northwest elevation.
