Description
The steadings and outbuildings at Rossie form an exceptionally fine complex situated on a steep hill behind Rossie Farmhouse. Most of the buildings date from the 19th century, although the earliest structures are from the 18th century.
The west block consists of a double range featuring single-storey walls made of whinstone, with droved dressings and pantile roofs, along with skew gables and simple collar-beam roofs. The east face of this block showcases a five-bay open ashlar arcade with segmental arches and square piers.
The main block is arranged in a square of parallel traditional ranges, with additional ranges on the east side above the farm road. These single-storey vernacular ranges have rubble walls, ashlar quoins, skew gables with block finials, and old pantile roofs with hipped ends. A mid-19th century range on the east side features an open collar-beam roof supported by cast-iron columns. There is a longer range on the east side that includes an outside stone stair with a metal handrail leading to the gable end, along with a perch and pigeon-hole above. Note that a modern shed is not included in this description.
