Description
58 Buffies Brae in Dunfermline is a pair of early 19th century single-storey and attic terraced cottages, with alterations. The northern cottage consists of two dwellings, and the lower cottage, No 58, is set at a slightly lower level. Both cottages feature coped gables with scrolled skewputts and diamond pattern decoration. They are constructed of coursed stugged sandstone, painted white on the principal northern elevation, while No 58 has a harled eastern elevation, with ashlar dressings.
The principal elevation has an eaves band and cornice, with architraved openings. The central entrance serves both cottages, each with a 4-panel timber door and narrow rectangular fanlight. There are flanking outer windows for each cottage, with an additional second window to the left for No 58 and a small inserted window to the right for No 60. No 58 also has a later inserted boxed dormer in the center.
On the western elevation, there is an attic window to the right of the gable end, while the eastern elevation is blank. The cottages mainly feature 4-pane horned timber sash and case windows, with an aluminium dormer. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are partially removed gablehead stacks at either end of the terrace, along with one rebuilt in brick to the east of No 60-62. The interiors were not inspected in 1999.
