Description
Glen Bridge in Dunfermline, designed by D H Shaw, Burgh Engineer, and F A MacDonald and Partners, Consulting Engineers from Glasgow, was constructed between 1930 and 1932. This road bridge features a single segmental main span measuring 184 feet 10 inches, flanked by three minor arches of 23 feet each on either side. Made of reinforced concrete, the bridge has open spandrels supported by four vertical posts on each side of the main span, with transverse braces connecting the outer faces of the arches. The footpaths are slightly corbelled out from the roadway, and the bridge is adorned with balustraded parapets that include two pairs of Art Deco lamp standards on either side of the main span. Each lamp standard has a broad base with geometric panels, a narrower square-plan section above, and is topped with circular metal posts featuring finialled spherical lanterns. The bridge's swept wings end in small square-plan piers designed in the Art Deco style.
