Description
Ye Olde Hotel, located at 59 and 61 Main Street in Leuchars, is an earlier 19th century hotel with a large addition from the early 20th century. The building is two stories high with an attic and features a mix of masonry types, including rubble, coursed rubble, and harl, all predominantly painted white. It has a base course and oriel windows in the later addition, with some leaded panes.
The eastern elevation shows a three-bay section from the earlier 19th century on the left, which includes a band course. To the right is the early 20th century addition, featuring a single bay section with a slightly advanced doorpiece that includes an entrance and a window above. The far right has a tall, steeply-pitched gable with irregular window placements and a canted oriel window set below the advanced apex.
The northern elevation has a two-bay layout with an oriel window on the right at the first floor, accompanied by a pitched roof dormer above, separated by deeply overhanging eaves.
The southern elevation also features a two-bay design with a doorway on the ground right. To the far left, there is a recessed low monopitch section that connects to the gig house and hayloft. The glazing varies, with predominantly timber sash and case windows, and some diamond leaded panes in the 20th century addition. The 19th century building has modern roof tiles, while the later addition has grey slate. The older section has corniced gable stacks, and there is a tall stepped wallhead stack on the north side and a large stack on the west side of the later addition.
The gig house with hayloft is a single storey and attic structure with a pantiled roof and a central dormered loading hatch. It is built of rubble with ashlar dressings, and the eastern and southern elevations are painted white. Some openings in this structure have been blocked or altered.
Additionally, there is a boundary wall made of rubble with rounded coping that runs from north to south. A further section of the wall to the south runs from west to east, also made of rubble with gabled coping.
