Description
The mausoleum, likely dating to around 1758 and first used in 1781, is a large, classical structure with a roughly cruciform plan. It is now derelict and partially ruined, situated on the site of an earlier prehistoric fort. The mausoleum is constructed from polished ashlar, predominantly with V-channelled detailing. A blocked entrance is located on the north-west side, while a round-headed opening is set within a projecting, pedimented porch, where flanking columns originally stood but have since been destroyed. The mausoleum is set within a rectangular enclosure defined by rubble retaining walls. Tall, square, rusticated ashlar gatepiers mark the west side of the enclosure. The mausoleum was first used in 1781 as a final resting place for George, the 21st Earl of Crawford. According to A.H. Millar, its construction may have been contemporaneous with Crawford Lodge, suggesting a date of 1758.
