Description

Seton House is an 18th-century house, altered in 1877. It is a two-story, four-bay, rectangular building with a crowstepped gable and a stone-clad brick buttress. The house is constructed from random rubble with raised margins.

The south elevation, which is the principal facade, features a modern timber door in the bay to the right of the center at ground level. To the outer right is a window, and two windows flank a narrow light to the left. The first floor has regular window placement, and the right-hand bay features a timpany gable.

The west elevation, facing onto The Causeway, is gabled and dominated by a near full-height, giant battered buttress in the center. A window is located to the right at ground level, and another to the left at first floor level.

The north elevation, the rear of the house, has its ground floor obscured by boundary fencing, with a small window positioned centrally on the first floor.

Modern glazing is fitted throughout. The roof is covered with grey slates. Squared rubble stacks have thackstanes and some cans, with ashlar-coped crowsteps and beak skewputts.

According to local history, Seton House was the dower house of Blackhall Castle, a residence of the Seton family, and also served as the town house of Captain Robert Seton of Drummaird. He entertained Archbishop Sharp here on May 2nd 1679 before Sharp's murder at Magus Muir. Although a Seton coat of arms was previously reported to be positioned above the main entrance, it is no longer visible on the building. A fine coat of arms is, however, present above a garage door a few yards north of the house.
