Boundary Walls, Back Lane, Culross

The boundary walls along Back Lane in Culross are tall, made of sandstone rubble, with replacement coping stones on the northern part of Back Causeway. There is a blocked doorway in this section. The wall turns north up Hagg's Wynd, which is swept at the corner, and there is a break in the wall to the left. Running north from The Study, the wall encloses Hagg's Wynd to the east and features three doorways that provide access to The Study garden.

The western wall continues along Back Lane, while the eastern wall curves northeast towards Erskine Brae. Across from this, a wall encloses the gardens of the Erskine Brae housing estate, also swept at the corner of Back Lane and Erskine Brae, with a blocked doorway and an inscribed lintel reading '18 J CH K 07', possibly referring to James Ker. This wall continues northwest along Erskine Brae.

The walls bound either side of the narrow Back Lane, which has sloping coping stones. Narrow steps, known as Hagg's Steps, lead off to the south, with walls on either side and doorways to the left and right at the top, as well as a doorway to the right at the bottom that leads into the Culross Pottery garden. Back Lane runs west towards the eastern end of the Culross Palace garden, featuring buttresses to the north, before heading south. The northern wall is swept at the corner and has a blocked doorway with an inscribed lintel reading '18 J CH K 07' to the left, while a door to the right provides access to the 'hanging gardens', which are terraced gardens behind the houses of J Robertson and R Milne, enclosed by walls.

The walls also bound the pathway to the rear of Culross Palace, curving southwards to enclose the lane between Bessie Bar's Hall and The Old School House. There are two doorways at the corner, one to the west being blocked, each with an inscribed lintel reading '18 J CH K 07'. Steps lead down towards Bessie Bar's Hall, with a drainage channel to the east. Additionally, sandstone rubble walls bound Ailie's Vennel, which leads south from Low Causeway.
