Description

4 Post Office Lane in North Queensferry is a pair of symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay houses built in the late 18th century, with modern extensions added to the rear. The exterior is rendered with painted margins and features stone cills.

The principal (north) elevation shows identical symmetrical designs for both houses, with No 4 on the right and No 6 on the left. Each has a central timber boarded replacement door, with No 6 featuring a two-leaf door. The outer bays have flanking windows, and there are two first-floor windows set close to the eaves.

The west elevation is a plain gable, with the ground rising to the first-floor level to the south.

On the south elevation, No 4 is on the left, featuring an upper ground level extension to the right of the central door, flanked by windows and with two rooflights above. No 6, on the right, has a single-storey pitched extension (with the ground dug out to the rear) to the left of a two-storey rounded and oblong flat-roofed stair tower extension at the far right. There is a first-floor window above the single-storey extension and another on the left return of the stair tower.

The east elevation is a plain gable with a blocked central attic window that is no longer visible, featuring an advanced rendered cill.

The principal elevation has 12-pane timber sash and case windows with horns, while the rear elevation has modern windows and doors. The roof is pitched, covered with pantiles and easing slates, and features raised ashlar coped skews, gablehead stacks, a central sandstone ridge stack, and clay cans.

Inside No 4, there are no original features, and a modern central staircase is located at the rear of the cottage. No 6 was not seen during the last inspection in 2002.
