Description

Dated 1776, 10 Post Office Lane is a two-story, three-bay, square-plan traditional house with a modern two-story extension and conservatory to the rear. The exterior is painted harling with droved stone margins.

The north (principal) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central door topped by a narrow fanlight and a marriage inscription reading '17 I M/ M M 76'. The door is flanked by windows, with further windows on the first floor in the outer bays.

The west elevation is a plain gable. The south elevation includes a modern ground floor lean-to conservatory on the left and a two-story flat-roofed concrete extension to the centre. There’s a first floor window close to the eaves on the left side. The east elevation shows an advanced gable from a former attached house that is now demolished. It contains a modern French door to the right and an elongated window to the right.

Four-pane timber sash and case windows are present on the north side and on the first floor facing south; modern glazing is elsewhere. The front door is a timber-panelled and two-pane glazed door. The pitched roof is covered in pantiles and easing slates, with raised ashlar coped skews, coped gablehead stacks, and octagonal clay cans.

The house was formerly connected to a building on the east side, which has since been demolished. The marriage inscription and pantiles are notable features that contribute to the character of the early village street plan. The house is part of an 18th century arrangement of single and multi-story dwellings that form a large U-shape from number 4 Post Office Lane to number 1 Helen Place (formerly known as Chapel Place). Post Office Lane was historically known as North Lane, serving as the main route down to the shore of St James’s Bay, which has been largely in-filled due to quarrying.
