Description

Greer Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage of single storey, originally with three bays, to which a further bay was added to the left, incorporating a former single-room dwelling. Later piended and flat-roofed extensions were added to the rear. The cottage is rendered and has painted margins.

The south elevation features a central timber-panelled door with a three-light rectangular fanlight. This is flanked by modern multi-paned bowed windows, with a single modern bowed window to the left. The west elevation adjoins a tenement block. The north elevation is partially visible and shows various modern single-storey extensions. The east elevation adjoins Heron House, which is listed separately.

The roof is pitched and covered with grey and green slates, featuring raised flat-headed skews, a chamfered skewputt, and a coped apex stack to the former west gable end. A single clay chimney can is present.

A lower, narrower single-room dwelling with a pantiled roof was incorporated into the west side of the cottage, circa the 1960s to early 1970s. Greer Cottage forms part of an 18th-century row of single and multi-storey dwellings that create a large U-shaped arrangement from No 4 Post Office Lane to No 1 Helen Place (previously known as Chapel Place). The property is referenced on the 1856 Ordnance Survey map and is described in “Historic North Queensferry and Peninsula” (2000).
