Description

The Old Grange Schoolhouse, likely designed by James Thomson in the late 19th century, is a 2-storey, 3-bay Arts and Crafts former schoolhouse featuring a well-preserved interior. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone and includes gables with half-timbering and canted bays, as well as stone mullions on the windows.

The north elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a central single bay gable that contains a 2-leaf timber door topped by a simple rectangular glazed fanlight. Above this door is a bipartite window. The outer bays feature larger gables with 6-light canted bays at the ground level and tripartite windows above. A continuous monopitch porch supported by decorative posts leads to the entrance.

The windows are timber sash and case with horns, featuring 4 panes over plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The building has gable stacks to the west and east and a wallhead stack to the south.

Inside, the schoolhouse boasts a good interior with an inner timber entrance door that has a glazed upper half featuring a central stained glass panel, along with glazed sidelights and a fanlight. The hall has a high dado height with timber paneling and a timber staircase. The sitting room also features a timber panelled dado and a glazed tiled fireplace with a timber chimneypiece and overmantle. Additional glazed fireplaces and timber chimneypieces are present, along with predominantly 6-panel timber doors.

The gatepiers and boundary walls to the north consist of a low rubble wall with gabled coping, flanked by a pair of squat round gatepiers topped with rounded caps.
