Description
This is a substantial Jacobethan-style school building, originally designed by George Arthur in 1883 and with a later North wing added by James Thomson in 1905. The main building is a single-story, 11-bay structure following an E-plan, with a T-plan addition to the rear. A distinctive feature is the birdcage bellcote perched atop the central gabled bay, with corbelled corners over rounded arrises. The building is constructed of squared yellow sandstone courses, featuring a deep bull-faced sandstone base course which is jettied and has continuous projecting wallheads. Windows are stone mullioned, single or bipartite, and are set within relieving segmental arches.
The South (principal) elevation is dominated by a slightly advanced central gabled bay containing a tripartite window flanked by smaller gabled entrance porches with stone steps leading up to the entrance doors. Symmetrical three-bay links connect the main section, with regular fenestration throughout. Advanced gabled outer bays each have stone mullioned tripartite windows in the gable end, with regular fenestration to the returns.
The North (rear) elevation has regular fenestration and abuts the 1905 addition. The East and West (side) elevations also feature regular fenestration.
The North wing, built in a similar style, is two-story and T-plan, and abuts the main building to the South. Its principal elevation (North) has gabled double bays to the centre and outer bays, with bipartite windows featuring cavetto moulded margins. An inscribed panel in the central gable head displays the ASB monogram, representing the Airdrie School Board. Two service doors provide access to the lower floor. The rear elevation (South) has a gabled, advanced bay to the centre, abutting the main building, with additional gabled features including a dormer and a Dutch gable. A lean-to corridor runs along the right return, and a small gabled entrance porch is located to the right.
The building primarily retains a mixture of plate glass and multi-pane sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slates with lead flashing, and the building is equipped with cast-iron rainwater goods. It also has coped gable stacks and skewputts.
The interior was refitted in the 1970s, incorporating painted timber panelling to the walls and ceiling in the outer wings.
The boundary is defined by a semicircular-arched coping on squared sandstone rubble wall. Ashlar gatepiers stand at intervals, featuring a plinth, chamfered panel, and segmental arch caps. Plain cast-iron gates and railings complete the enclosure.
