Description
Whitecraigs Railway Station, possibly designed by Formans and McCall in 1903 and altered around the 1970s, is a single-storey, largely symmetrical railway station with a rectangular plan and some Arts and Crafts detailing. The building features a distinctive swept roof with deep, overhanging eaves and gables adorned with decorative bargeboarding and timber purlins. It is constructed of red brick with timber detailing, including a base course, a cill course, and smooth window margins.
The north elevation facing the street has a central section with altered openings, flanked by advanced, half-timbered gables. The south elevation, which faces the platform, includes a high red brick base course with horizontal timber boarding above and eaves that project to form a canopy. Canted bay windows flank the central section, which was modified in the 1970s, and there are projecting part-glazed panels at the far ends. Some timber dentilled detailing can be seen around former openings.
The windows predominantly feature multi-pane glazing in timber frames with top-opening hoppers. The roof is covered with grey slates, complemented by red ridge tiles and coped ridge stacks.
The interior, last observed in 2015, has undergone some modifications, especially in the central section during the 1970s when a new waiting room and ticket office were created. However, some timber-lined rooms remain, showcasing simple timber cornicing and dentilled details around the former ticket hatch. Additionally, there is a brick fire surround in the room to the west.
