Description

This building is a single-storey Scots Renaissance bank and former post office located at 2 Mains Avenue in Giffnock, dating from the earlier 20th century. It is set on sloping ground with a raised basement at the side and rear, featuring a trapezoid plan. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, showcasing moulded and roll-moulded arrises. Notable architectural elements include a base course, corniced windows with moulded cills on the principal floor, an eaves cornice, and a parapet with balustraded sections. The stone mullions add to the building's character.

The east elevation, which is the corner aspect, features three bays with a wide central door (No 2) set in a raised panel that breaks the eaves, topped by an attenuated crow-stepped gable. Stone steps lead up to the vestibule, which is framed by a basket-arched and stop-chamfered door surround, adorned with a carved rectangular panel inscribed 'Bank of Scotland' and a square medallion panel above, linked by scrolled detail. Windows flank this central entrance.

The southeast elevation facing Mains Avenue is divided into five bays, with the left side comprising a tripartite window featuring a broad centre light with a lower cill and panels below the cills of the flanking lights. Mirrored architraved doorways flank this window, with the left door leading to No 4. The two bays on the right each contain a tripartite window.

The northeast elevation, facing Eastwoodmains Road, consists of four bays, divided into two pairs with the right bays advanced. All bays on the principal floor feature tripartite windows, with the right bays being slightly higher above a wide and deep basement door and narrow basement lights. There are small square lights in the basement to the left of centre.

The building features replacement timber small-pane glazing and three-pane fanlights above the principal doors. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there is an ashlar stack with a battered cope. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 2000.
