Description
Whitecraigs House is a large, two-storey villa designed by HE Clifford and built around 1898. It is an asymmetrical example of the Arts and Crafts style, constructed with rock-faced snecked ashlar on the main body of the house, which contains the public rooms. A wide gable is on the left side, and a projecting square bay is on the right; the remainder of the house is recessed to the north. A porch is located in the re-entrant angle. The windows are fitted with original glazing, and the roofs are covered in slate and tile.
The interior remains largely intact. There is extensive timber panelling, notably in the main hall and study (originally the dining room) and in the billiards room on the upper floor. Decorative cornice plasterwork is also present, and original chimney pieces survive in the principal rooms and hall. The study features an ingle-neuk arrangement at the south gable, with dado panelling, original timbered doors and a screen opposite, linking into the hall. The large, two-storeyed hall has an original chimney piece, timber staircase, and arcaded gallery overhead, incorporating carved Mannerist detail, and a painted leaded window consisting mostly of clear glass. The drawing room has decorative ceiling and chimney-piece details, while the smaller dining room (originally a parlour) also has a decorative chimney-piece.
The front (west-facing) of the property includes garden steps and terraces. Whitecraigs House occupies a corner site within landscaped grounds, which are enclosed by a stone-built perimeter wall with ashlar-built circular gatepiers.
