Description
The building is a disused railway station located on Station Road in Laurencekirk, dating from 1849. It is a single-storey structure with four bays, predominantly finished in harled render. The base features a bull-faced battered red sandstone course, with a continuous red sandstone cill course and crow-stepped gables.
On the southeast elevation, which faces the railway, the design is symmetrical with two central bays that are recessed. These bays have timber-lined walls and feature a pair of architraved bipartite windows at the center, flanked by notice boards. A cast-iron canopy extends over the recess and platform, supported by cast-iron columns with depressed arches. The outer left and right gabled bays each have 3-light canted windows and panelled timber doors with small-pane skylights on the inside returns.
The northeast elevation was not visible in 2001. The northwest elevation is also symmetrical and consists of four bays, with a pair of bipartite windows in the central bays and an eaves blocking course above. The outer left and right gabled bays are advanced and each has a bipartite window at the center.
The southwest elevation is blank. The building features a variety of timber windows, grey slate roofs with tiled ridges, and a glazed roof over the canopy. Coped harled stacks break the pitch of the roof, with circular cans.
Inside, the station comprises two rooms divided by a timber screen. The walls are lined with boarded and panelled timber, and many original fittings remain, including a simple fireplace.
