Description

Irvine Station, built in 1839, is a two-storey, six-bay, L-plan railway station and offices located on the down side. It is constructed from ashlar sandstone and features chamfered margins, battered cills, and overhanging eaves.

On the eastern elevation, the gable end of the advanced wing is positioned to the left, with a central modernised entrance flanked by windows. Above the entrance is a stone mullioned bipartite window, with additional windows on either side and a slit window in the gablehead. The wing to the right has a central entrance and a stone mullioned bipartite window on the right, while the left window is blocked. The first floor has three symmetrical windows.

The northern elevation features a gable end built against an embankment. The southern elevation has been altered, with an external staircase leading up to the platform at the first floor level and a later entrance at ground level to the right, along with a window at the first floor.

The western elevation is also built against an embankment, with the platform at the first floor level. This side has been altered, but retains stone mullioned bipartites and paired doorways, with additional openings interspersed.

The station has varied timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and exposed rafters. Inside, there is an original curved, panelled ticket office featuring a floreate cornice that extends to the walls.

The platform building on the western side is asymmetrical and consists of two parts. The main block is gable-ended, two-storey, and seven-bay, made of squared and snecked sandstone with chamfered margins and battered cills. It has a stone mullioned tripartite window to the right, doorways to the left, and single windows on the first floor. The second part to the right is set back and has a sloping flat roof that encloses a disused ramp to the platform level, with staggered stone mullioned tripartites in the centre. The platform elevation has been significantly altered and is concealed behind a new frontage.
