Description
These are mid-to-late 18th century stables, currently derelict, forming part of Gilmerton Home Farm. The building is a two-storey stable block constructed of random rubble with red and cream sandstone dressings. Brick relieving arches are visible above the ground floor doorways. There are three doorways, with irregular openings. Windows are placed in each outer bay, two flanking the central door. The first floor has two windows, and there are two windows in the north gable end. Evidence indicates a former single-storey addition once extended from the south side. The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof was originally covered with grey slates, featuring straight skews and ashlar coped stacks. Internally, there are stall divisions and sets to the floor. The stables form part of a larger farm complex including a separately listed Gothick style screen between the house and farm buildings, and some ruinous single-storey cottages. An 8-arched cartshed and granary, now converted to housing and also listed separately, are nearby. A plan of the Gilmerton Estate from 1784, by John Donaldson, references the stables.
